2017 Beauty and Skincare Favourites

In the year of 2017, I began working full time. As a result, I’ve sadly not been as active here on the blog as I once was. I do miss it, but I find that when you’re working all day, you come home and you don’t want to keep working. The same goes for weekends, and I just crave being able to switch off. But, I told myself no matter what, I’d put together my 2017 Beauty and Skincare Favourites*, and I tell you what! It’s been fun to reflect on some of these products and write about them. It’s great to not have to write a blog post focusing solely on one brand or a new product release. These are legitimately my faves of 2017 and I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I put it together. Oh and, in 2018, watch this space because yo girl feels like she’s slowly getting her writing flare back, and she wants to come back, properly.

2017 Beauty and Skincare Favourites

2017 Beauty and Skincare Favourites

This is absolutely a no-brainer and probably no surprise to any of you who have been following my blog or socials for quite some time. All of this year I’ve basically used nothing other than Benefit products on my brows. They just do everything brow related so damn well! One thing I have done though is switch between some different product combos, so here we go.

Precisely My Brow*, Gimme Brow*, 3D Brow Tones: These products combined, in this order, were my go-to for most of this year. 3D Brow Tones was probably the most surprising product for me of this bunch because I’ve had it for ages, and never really used it. This product acts as a brow product softner. If you go too ham with your brows especially in the middle of your face, go over that section with this product, and it will become lighter. It brings back some dimension, 3D you see. It’s been a lifesaver when I’ve accidentally made brow mistakes!

Ka-Brow*, Fool Proof*, Goof Proof*: Hello to my latest! My brows have not been tamed for the longest time. The only way that I can make them look semi on fleek is by drawing the arch first with Ka-Brow. The pomade and the little brush inside the packaging, do such a good job at bringing back structure to my plucked brows! I usually only use it for the arch and the ends of my brow, and then use a combination of Fool Proof and Goof Proof towards the centre of my face.

2017 Beauty and Skincare Favourites

An early 2017 love of mine that has stuck with me pretty much for all of this year is the Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Range*. There’s something really magical about this range that just works. The shade selection is incredible and I know that because there is a lot of shades that I would never have imagined to like, but I really do. The formula glides on the lips and it’s incredibly comfortable to wear throughout the day. If you want to know more about this range, click here for my full review and swatches.

2017 Beauty and Skincare Favourites

Without a doubt, one of the largest changes I made this year was switching to a predominantly Philosophy Skincare regime. It was really quite unintentional because I was already enjoying what I was using. But product by product, I found myself reaching for more Philosophy. My all in all favourite products would definitely be the Philosophy Take A Deep Breath Day Moisturiser* and Microdelivery Detoxifying Oxygen Peel*.

The Philosophy Take A Deep Breath Day Moisturiser is a light green colour and very cooling to the touch. It goes on feeling quite thick and nourishing, but it’s the type of moisturiser that sinks into the skin. It still keeps my skin feeling very moisturised though, not like some of those moisturisers that sink in and you basically feel like you never applied anything. I love using this product in the morning after my shower, before I apply my makeup. I think that in 2017 I made a really conscious effort of always using moisturiser under my makeup, and I really believe this has helped my skin enormously in terms of not getting as many breakouts as I used to.

2017 was a year of many two-step or skincare combo product ranges. By far my favourite has been the Philosophy Microdelivery Detoxifying Oxygen Peel. It isn’t a product for the faint-hearted because my gosh it looks hilarious. This product can be used all over the face. However, I prefer just concentrating on my nose. It really unclogs all the gunk in there! Basically, since I’ve had this product in my life I’ve said goodbye to Glam Glow and my beloved Biore Charcoal Nose strips. Application is very easy. Once I have cleaned and dried my face, I apply step one evenly to my nose. I then wait around 30 seconds before applying step two directly on top of the areas where I added one. Three minutes later (or even a little longer because I just love this product so much), I use the tool to remove the product, and then remove any remaining product with warm water. What I’m left with is an insanely smooth nose, and unclogged pores. You have to try this one for yourself and it’s definitely my #1 recommendation from everything in this post.

Slowly but surely, a lot of my favourite makeup products have become creams or liquids. Had you asked me about cream or liquid products a few years ago, I was really not a fan. But, I think that it was because I didn’t know how to use them, or I was using the wrong types of products. I’ve been loving all things Benefit Stains* and you can see a full blog post on them here. Other than that, I’ve been obsessed with cream highlighters like Benefit Whats Up*Josie Maran Argan Enlightment Illumising Wand*and the Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Quickie Contour Stick*. I love using these products under my powder foundation for work. They appear a lot more natural than powders do, and they’re a lot easier to use in the morning when I’m in a rush.

What were some of your favourites in 2017?

  • Oh gosh Katina, I identify the struggles of working full time in the marketing industry and then coming home and doing it for yourself! I’ve taken more breaks this year than I’d like to be honest.

I’ve just finished up a Gimmie Brow and I’m *this close* to finishing up Goof Proof before moving on to the Hourglass Brow arch – I have enjoyed Benefit’s Brow products over the years, they were the first I ever used!

I never hear anyone talk about the lip stylos post their release so it’s great to hear you rave about them, any colours you recommend now?

Philosophy skincare I use a lot of too! At the moment I’m using their micro delivery daily wash, their day and night hope in a jar and the purity cleanser. They’re a bit of a grey area when it comes to cruelty free… they say they only test when required by law, but then they don’t sell in China or Brazil (the only legal places to animal test). Very conflicting. I’ll try known cruelty free brands and see if I need to supplement.

I hardly ever use cream products and I definitely want to get back into it such as Benefit Watts Up and Hoola Quickie Contpur stick. I just never remember!

    Great round up 🙂

  • I’ve been eyeing the Benefit brow products too, and now I’m definitely getting one. Hope you had a great holiday Katina. And hopefully, this 2018, your work don’t leave you too tired to blog. 🙂

Philosophy skincare is definitely something I want to try in 2018. I hope to start working this year and not blogging as frequently is a worry for me. Luckily enough I do have A CRAZY AMOUNT of pre written content and till I find work i want to keep pre writing so I at least can go easy on myself the first few months of work before i can write 2-3 posts a week. Hopefully you find a nice balance this year.
