I was planning on writing a Mecca Max first impressions blog post. However, one product from the range really stood out to me and I really didn’t want to delay my review because I think it’s a must have. What is it? Well, it’s the Mecca Max Oh My Matte! Mattifying Primer*. If you have oily skin, or know someone with oily skin that is in desperate need of a kick-ass, affordable, accessible mattifying primer, keep on reading!
WHAT IS IT?
The Mecca Max Oh My Matte! Mattifying Primer is a mattifying primer. If you haven’t used a primer before, think of it as the first step in your actual makeup routine, after you’ve finished your skincare. This particular primer is a mattifying primer, meaning that it should keep your oils and excess shine at bay. If you’re someone who has oily skin, mattifying primers should be your best friend. This particular primer claims that it is a ‘velvety, soft-focus’ primer.
As this product is part of the Mecca Max family, this primer is very accessible. It is $22 AUD (which I think is an ABSOLUTE STEAL), for 30ml of product.
HOW HAVE I TESTED THIS PRODUCT?
I’ve worn this primer quite a few times now and have especially put it to the test on work days, where I have also gone out after work. It has also been worn under both liquid and powder foundations. On these days, I applied my make up around 7:30am, and came home around 9:30-10:30pm.
WHAT’S THE FORMULA + APPLICATION LIKE?
It’s interesting, to say the least. This primer is fairly thick as you can see from my photo. It does become sort of liquidy once it’s warmed up in-between your fingers. But, it’s also sticky and when you start rubbing it into the skin you feel this stickiness even more so. The texture you’re left with is kinda tacky, and then the area feels quite dry. I haven’t really used anything like this before.
I apply the primer to my nose, t-zone and on some parts of my cheeks. I think that because this is a really quick drying, tacky formula, the key is to work fast, and do small areas at a time. I will mention that I have seen some negative reviews of this primer. Reading them though, I think it’s because they’ve tried to do their whole face at once. I think that’s a no no because it’ll dry quickly and you can’t work it in properly. So yeah, definitely do small bits at a time and I think you’ll be all g! In case you’re sensitive to scents, you’d also be glad to know that this is scent free.
HOW WAS IT?
Come lunchtime, I would have most likely blotted already. With this primer, I didn’t have to blot at all. I had events on after work, so I only used some powder around my nose to remove a little bit of excess shine, but that was it. Even when I came home around 9:30-10:30pm after work, my makeup still looked fresh. Honestly, it is so rare for me to not blot my face at work so I wasn’t really that surprised!
Out of all of the primers I currently own, I’d definitely say that this is best at keeping me oil free, while also ensuring that my skin doesn’t look dry and flat. I would definitely suggest this to all of you that struggle with oils coming through to the surface when they’re unwanted. Especially for a price of $20, there isn’t anything to lose. Plus, at Mecca you can always get samples or try in store.
