Why I Love Layering Highlighters

I’ve recently become addicted to combining highlighters. I can’t seem to stop using a cream highlighter base, and topping it off with a pressed highlighter. Even though I have oily skin, it’s a winner. Today’s post, I’ll go through a few of my faves and explain Why I Love Layering Highlighters.

Before stepping into the actual highlighters that I love using in detail, why do I love layering them? Well, it’s pretty simple. Using two highlighters together creates an entirely new highlighter. Mixing colours and formulas is quite fun, and you shouldn’t be scared to try it, especially if you’re oily. Since I’ve started using highlighters together, I actually haven’t used them on their own. It means I’ve got a great range of colours, basically more than doubling my highlighter collection. Now, into the actual highlighters that I love using together!

Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizing Wand* is a very gentle, cream highlighter. The Argan Oil makes this product literally sink into your skin upon contact, making it look incredibly natural. Initially, I wasn’t a fan. I thought it was boring and I was so close to giving it to a friend. Lucky that I decided to keep it in my drawer and randomly one day used it for layering. This highlighter really excels when you use it as a base. Because of the oil and how well it works into the skin, it makes whatever you place on top of it look incredible. I find that it makes my pressed highlighters look more concentrated, yet soft and almost blurred.

Last week in my My Top 5 From Benefit Cosmetics Post I mentioned how much I love Benefit Whats Up. Basically, this highlighter is what started my obsession with layering. Honestly, just look at that swatch. It isn’t the most pigmented of cream highlighters and it is a little less concentrated than the Josie Maran one. But, it’s still incredibly stunning. I love how it really adds little pink highlighter tones to whatever you place on top of it. This looks really natural on my skintone, but so lovely in the sunlight.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Bronzed Amber* is only new to my collection. But, let me tell you. I fell hard for this product! I originally looked at this product and thought what the heck am I going to do with it? Once I started using it, I couldn’t stop. I loved it by itself and I knew that I already liked layering highlighters, so I thought why not try with this! Great decision. Layering with Bronzed Amber makes the orangey tones a little more subtle and brings out more of a soft highlight. It’s a perfect combo for summer.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal* is probably my favourite powder highlight of all time. I’m going to link you now to my full post on Becca’s Opal in it’s three different formulas here, because you need to see it in all forms, seriously. The way that I like to describe Opal is that it is a lighter shade of gold highlighter, that is extremely pigmented but also soft. It’s appropriate for all occasions and paired with these two creams, yes please.

I honestly couldn’t tell you which of these combinations is my favourite. What I can tell you though is that you really need to try highlighting some of the highlighters in your collection!

What’s your favourite highlighter?
Do you like layering highlighters?

PS: We could have almost played a game where you take a shot everytime I say the word highlighter in this post. Am I riiiight!?

I use my Sleek highlighting palette in Solstice to layer – I use the cream one first then any of the 3 powders next. It made me so sparkly and pretty and I love it! However, I do feel I need to get light-handed because I was a bit too shiny.
